Luther Burbank was an American botanist, horticulturist and pioneer in agricultural science. He developed more than 800 strains and varieties of plants over his 55-year career. Burbank's developments included those of fruits, flowers, grains, grasses, and vegetables. He developed a spineless cactus and the plumcot.

An Architect of Nature

Luther Burbank was past sixty before he could find the time he desired for the making of exact experiments records of his innumerable and unique with plants; he was seventy before the itch that had always been on him to express on paper his thoughts, reactions, observations, and philosophies could be even in slight measure gratified. Unquestionably if he had lived he would have poured forth his naturalist’s soul, and the last years would have been productive of exhilarating, pungent, and enlightening essays and books that would have greatly enriched our literature of thought and comment.

BacK of every plant, every shellfish, every burrowing rodent or ravaging animal, and back of every human being, there stretches an illimitable and mysterious heredity, about the nature and influence of which scientists and the wise men spend their lives in research, speculation, and conclusions. Little as we know of this subject we have pretty generally agreed that the newborn child has a heritage of tendencies and inclinations which furnish the foundation or groundwork from which he must build his house of Life.

There are always at least two sides of every Question which may be suggested to the human mind. Sometimes both views are correct, but far more often one is right, and according to facts and truth, the other wrong. All personal, social, moral and national success depends upon the Judicious wisdom of our choices made by the aid of science. Narrow personal prejudices and feelings quite too often becloud the issue and ultimate defeat is the inevitable result.

Life as we see it around us on this planet is usually thought to be confined to man, animals and plants, those organisms which grow and reproduce their kind with more or less precision.

Why should we omit crystals which grow as truly as plants and reproduce themselves quite as precisely to type, or the more primitive forms of life which are reproduced by division? Science is proving that the world is not half dead, but that every atom is all life and motion.
