Another eight dug up. Some of the big ones will slow me down. Delays are due to:

  1. Dry soil. I dig a well around the root so I can soak it to loosen rock hard soil. Many times laterals extend at ground level so they have to be cut off once they're uncovered and visible.
  2. Stringer laterals. This is when there are dozens of 1/2" or smaller stringer laterals that have to be cut, because they interfere with digging out around the root ball. Larger laterals are easier to deal with since there tend to be fewer of them.
  3. Depth. The largest mesquite root I dug up weighed over 75 pounds. Total depth was 30" to the bottom of the crown.
  4. Difficulty in cutting off the crown. This has to be done with a sharp shovel since there is very little room in the hole to get anything else down there to cut it.

There are approximately 200 total to dig up, 16 of which are now out. That includes a few cat's claw acacia.
